How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

A blast of cooling spray protects the skin and enhances your comfort.

The melanin in the hair follicles absorbs light energy and is converted to thermal energy.

This effectively destroys hair follicles, stem cells and dermal papillae while leaving the surrounding area unaffected.

How do I prepare for treatment?

For patients who are going for hair removal, they must avoid plucking, electrolysis or waxing from about six weeks before the treatment. Prophylactic antiviral may be prescribed for patients who have a history of herpes simplex virus. Ensure to shake your skin clean and make sure that it is thoroughly cleansed. Totally removing any remains of make up, creams, oils, topical anesthetics or products for self-tanning before going for a laser treatment. Also make sure to not exposed the treated area to sunlight or tanning booth light before or immediately after your treatment. Before your treatment, sunblock (SPF 30 or above) should be applied on your skin.

What can I expect during laser treatment?

Depending on the area that is being treated and the condition that is being treated as well, it can take as little as just a few minutes to complete or an hour, may be more. Treatments often take place in the office of the practitioner while a tour practitioner who moves around will have and use a small handpiece for the delivery of each laser pulse. During laser treatment, an intense light beam energy is placed in direction to your skin. The laser beam destroys the epidermis, which is the outer layer of your skin. Simultaneously, it heats the underlying skin (dermis), and this shrinks the collagen fibre. Eventually the wound heals and a new smooth and tight skin is formed.

What can I expect after treatment?

After your treatment, a cool compress or gel pack might be applied on your skin for comfort. Be sure not to worry about redness or any form of swelling as it will be resolved in about a few hours and your skin will be restored to its clean and smooth state.

What precautions should I take after treatment?

Even after you’ve received your laser treatment, make sure to not expose the treated area to sunlight. You can do this by applying sunblock (SPF 30 or above). Do not rub or clean the area you got treated with abrasive skin cleansers and don’t rinse it.

Does it hurt?

Sometimes, patients may experience some form of discomfort as each laser pulse touches the skin. Some patients describe it as that of when a rubber band snaps on the skin. The patented Dynamic Cooling Device TM (DCD TM) or air cooling helps remove this discomfort quickly. It’s often wise to discuss with your practitioner before the treatment to know if you’ll need a topical anesthetic prior to the treatment.

How many treatment sessions will I need?

There’s no generalization for this question. The number of sessions you’ll need to go for is mainly dependent on the kind of treatment you’re going for and the condition of your skin. To remove hair with laser treatment for example, multiple sessions are needed. Other kinds of condition may clear up totally in only one treatment. But major factors determine the number of sessions and nature of treatment, including how severe the condition you’re going to he treated for.
